Spartacus Star Andy Whitfield’s Cancer Returns

September 24, 2010
Source: Starz
Andy Whitfield, star of Starz’s “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” has been advised by his doctors to immediately resume aggressive treatment for a recurrence of cancer, as a result of which he will not be returning for the series’ second season, which was tentatively set to air in September 2011.

“It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far,” said Whitfield.

“Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time,” said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. “Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us.”

No decisions have yet been made about the future of the series. “Right now, we just want to extend our concern and support to Andy and his family,” said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director, Starz Media. “We will address our programming plans at some later date.”

Starz still plans to air the prequel to “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” in January 2011. Entitled “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” it focuses on the House of Batiatus before Spartacus arrives in Capua and stars returning cast members John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah and Manu Bennett, along with newcomer Dustin Clare.

Keck’s Exclusives: Jane Badler Vamps Up V

September 14, 2010

source: tvguide.com

V

Even though she played lizard leader Diana to wicked perfection on NBC’s original V from 1983-85, Jane Badler tells me she had to fight fang and nail to get cast as an all-new version of Diana on ABC’s reboot. “From the moment I heard V was coming back, it was something I was hoping to be part of, but they tested a lot of people for this role,” confides Jane from the Vancouver set. “A lot of years have passed, so it feels good to win something.” While this is an entirely different take on Diana — reimagined as the wicked mother of Anna (Morena Baccarin) — Jane admits it’s been challenging not to slither right back into her wonderfully over-the-top ’80s performance. “I’m still the way I’ve always been — lots of hair and eyes. A bit Raquel Welch-ish.”

When V returns in November, we’ll see Diana imprisoned on the mother ship in a cell designed to look like the reptilian visitors’ home planet. (Don’t ask Badler to describe the details, as they’ll all be added via special effects.)  Who sent her there? None other than daughter Anna! “I’m the queen in exile, locked away in a dungeon for 15 years,” says Jane. “It’s mother abuse!”

Oprah Premieres Final Season with Special Guests, Largesse for Audience

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey kicked off the first show of her 25th and final season on broadcast television by dancing on stage with one of Hollywood’s most famous hoofers, John Travolta, to the delight of her studio audience.

The crowd of 300 select fans stood, cheering and screaming during Monday’s show. Some wiped tears from their eyes.

Check out photos of Oprah Winfrey

Oprah harked back to her first show in 1986, when she tried to line up Don Johnson as her first guest since he was a huge star on Miami Vice at the time. He declined, and she told the audience that she couldn’t even “bribe” him with rhinestone sunglasses, adding that he never returned them.

Johnson then popped up, returning the sunglasses and wisecracking: “I understand things have been going OK for you.”

Oprah Winfrey, Paul McCartney among Kennedy Center honorees

The biggest surprise of all was what the giveaway queen awarded the audience: all-expenses-paid trips to Australia. She of course famously gave every audience member a car in 2004, an event that was once voted the greatest surprise, fiction or nonfiction, in TV history.

The announcement provoked paroxysms of squealing, hugging and more tears in the crowd as confetti fell from the rafters. Travolta came out dressed as “the real Qantas airline pilot” that he is. The audience still mustered cheers when they got smartphones a little later.

Another surprise: Paul Simon turned up to sing a song he’d written for her 10th anniversary.

Then it was Winfrey’s turn to cry.

Oprah back atop the Forbes Celebrity 100 list

The 56-year-old self-made billionaire isn’t going anywhere, really. Winfrey — who made some $315 million last year not only from her show, but also her magazine, website, radio channel, TV specials and movies like the Oscar-nominated Precious is launching her own network, OWN the Oprah Winfrey Network, on New Year’s Day.
