Spike TV’s Deadliest Warrior, Season Three!

August 16, 2010

MORE EPIC BATTLES BETWEEN HISTORY’S GREATEST WARRIORS!

Spike TV Renews The Multi-Platform Hit Series

“Deadliest Warrior” For A Third Season

Navy SEAL Richard “Mack” Machowicz Joins The Cast

Los Angeles, CA, August 16, 2010 – History’s most lethal combatants will continue the fight for ultimate supremacy as Spike TVrenews “Deadliest Warrior,” the network’s first original franchise hit, for a third season, it was announced today by Sharon Levy, executive vice president, original programming, Spike TV.  The series has averaged 1.6 million viewers over it first two seasons, the most recent airing from April-July.  The season 2 finale on July 27 was the #2 ranked show on cable in its timeslot.  The third season of “Deadliest Warrior” will premiere 10 episodes in Summer 2011.

Mack, a Navy SEAL and former host and producer of “Future Weapons” and “Weapons That Changed The World,” joins the cast for the new season. Mack brings a warrior’s perspective to this series, as well as a weapons and battle tactician’s expertise.  Mack will provide viewers a richer understanding of the men behind the weapons and provide insight into the specific military strategies of all the featured warriors.  His expertise with soldier craft and military hardware comes from his experience as a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Navy SEALs.  During his service tenure, he participated in numerous tactical operations with SEAL Team ONE and TWO.  While at SEAL Team TWO, he was attached to the training cadre as the Leading Petty Officer of Land, Mountain and Arctic Warfare.  He also has over 30 years experience in the martial arts, studying such systems as muay thai boxing, Jeet Kune Do, kickboxing, aikido, jujitsu, savate, arnis and karate.

Mack joins series regulars Geoff Desmoulin and Dr. Armand Dorian for season 3. Desmoulin, a biomedical engineer and karate black belt, is in charge of creating and executing all of the various and often intricate tests that are performed and subsequently entered into the show’s computer system.  Dorian analyzes the lethal potential of each attack on the human body and discusses the type of medical treatments which were available at the time to treat such wounds.

“Deadliest Warrior” is produced by 44 Blue Productions, Inc. with Rasha Drachkovitch and Tim Warren serving as executive producers.

The new season will delve deeper into the history of the legendary warriors to create an even more comprehensive composite of these formidable combatants.  Season 3 will also expand its scientific exploration of the warriors’ weaponry, illustrating its innovation and technology.

“We are confident the innovations to Spike’s franchise hit, “Deadliest Warrior,” will be a big hit with show’s ever-growing fan base,” said Levy.  “The addition of more scientific explanation behind the weapons and the historical context of the warriors will enhance the viewers’ experience.”

Deadliest Warrior: The Game” for Xbox LIVE Arcade has been a top-selling title on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, selling over 190,000 units within the first month of its July 14 release.

Also returning for a new season in conjunction with the new episodes will be Spike.com’s, original round table discussion series, “Deadliest Warrior – The Aftermath.”  For Season 2, it continued to be hugely successful, maintaining the online interest between episodes and generating a total of 2.7 million video views.  “Deadliest Warrior” also performed well on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, ranking as one of the highest selling TV series on the platform. In fact, since launching in April 2009, over 380,000 “Deadliest Warrior” episodes have been downloaded across various download-to-own platforms (iTunes, Xbox, PSN, etc).

Deadliest Warrior” show pages on Spike.com attracted a season average of over 227,000 weekly unique visitors.  Show-related videos generated over 16.6 million video views during the course of the season.

Along with the use of 21st century science and the latest in CGI technology, the series enlists warrior-specific, world-class fighters and experts to provide insight into what makes these combatants tick, analyzing every facet of their unique skills of destruction, culminating in a head-to-head final fight between two legends of the battlefield that will produce the deadliest warrior.  The recent second season featured such iconic warriors such as SWAT, Attila the Hun, Alexander the Great, Aztec Jaguar, Jesse James Gang, Al Capone Gang, Roman Centurion, India’s Rajput Warrior, Somali Pirate, KGB and CIA.

    Shark Week Returns on Discovery

    August 1, 2010

    By Angie Quidim

Probably one of my most favorite education programs that ever graced a cable station, Shark Week, starts today (8/1/2010).  This full week consists of aerial shots of great whites, habitat documentaries of the bull and tiger sharks as well as the feeding frenzies of basic shark behavior.  Some shows may be a too graphic for children under the age of 6 but it is quite an experience visualizing these natural warriors.

    ULTIMATE AIR JAWS

    Premiering Sunday, August 1, 9PM e/p
Off the coast of South Africa, massive great white sharks blast from the water, pulling a sneak attack on their seal prey. Shark expert Chris Fallows and filmmaker Jeff Kurr (AIR JAWS, AIR JAWS 2) arrive on the scene to investigate the aerial attacks using state-of-the-art technology including an HD camera that shoots in super slow motion – 2,000 frames per second. This enables the team to slow down a breaching shark from one second of real time to almost a minute, and in so much detail you can literally count every tooth in the shark’s mouth. Fallows and Kurr also employ a submarine and remotely operated helicopter to capture this incredible footage.

    SHARK ATTACK SURVIVAL GUIDE

    Premiering Monday, August 2, 9PM e/p
In Shark Attack Survival Guide, host Terry Schappert puts his Special Forces training to the test to demonstrate to viewers how to survive devastating shark attacks. What do you do when attacked by a shark in shallow water? What’s the one thing to remember when confronted with one Earth’s largest predators while on a deep water dive? Terry immerses himself in these deadly scenarios and reveals the secrets to escaping these terrifying shark encounters alive.

    DAY OF THE SHARK 3

    Premiering Monday, August 2, 10PM e/p
Shark attack survivors recall six bloody tales of what happens when humans unwittingly find themselves face to face with the ocean’s top predator. Australian Navy Diver Paul De Gelder is on an anti-terrorist mission, when suddenly, he becomes the hunted. When a great white shark catapults him into the air, Paul Buckley lands on its tail and holds on for dear life. Paddy Trumbull loses 40% of her blood, and most of her “bottom,” when a shark sneaks up behind her near the Great Barrier Reef. Champion Surfer Todd Murashige had promised his wife he would quit surfing and take care of his family. Now it may be too late, as he lies dying on a Hawaii beach.
    SHARK BITE BEACH
    Premiering Tuesday, August 3, 9PM e/p
In 2008, fear gripped beaches along the coast of California and Mexico in the wake of multiple horrific shark attacks. SHARK BITE BEACH returns to the site of the attacks to recreate the dramatic stories of survival and search for clues that might explain why sharks mistook humans for prey that fateful summer.

SHARK BITES: ADVENTURES IN SHARK WEEK
    Premiering Wednesday, August 4, 10PM e/p
Late, Late Show Host, CRAIG FERGUSON has always loved SHARK WEEK. But when he gets the chance to get off the couch and be in the show, he gets in way over his head. Discovery wants him go to the Bahamas to swim with, touch, and, if he has the guts, FEED sharks. And Ferguson starts to have second thoughts about getting close to the apex predators of the sea. Especially since he will not have the protection of a cage. Everything Ferguson sees and experiences reminds him of what he has learned from watching the Discovery Channel. Woven into Ferguson’s journey are clips from the scariest, most exciting moments of the last 20 years of SHARK WEEK. The results are funny, scary, and ultimately very moving. Terrified of getting in the water and too proud not to, Ferguson makes the leap into an ocean full of hungry sharks.

    The Colony: Season 2

    July 31, 2010

    The Colony

    Airs Tuesday Nights at 10pm

    Discovery Channel

    by Angie Quidim

The Colony is an experiment where several people undergo strenuous situations in anapocalyptic environment.  The crew will have 50 days (10 episodes) to create shelter, secure a reliable food and water source, while creating a society in which they all can exist peacefully.  They are tested mentally, physically and emotionally in different scenarios through the series.  Experts in disaster preparedness make educated guesses as to the reactions and give their two cents as the situations arise in the show.

The first season included a very good handful of people that you would want to be around.  There was a mechanic, two carpenters, and engineer, a martial arts instructor, a doctor, a nurse, and a marine biologist.  The first experiment was in a warehouse district in Los Angeles.  The compound was enclosed and the colonists had to use the resources around them to create livable conditions.  This experiment was a success as you watched human ingenuity at work.  There were able to create filtered water, a reliable good source and a secure home base as well as create some modern day conveniences such as a washer, shower, soap, communications station, and an oven.

The conclusion of this season was the colonists abandoning their home to travel to a new shelter where survivors have amassed up north.

In this season of The Colony, the survivors are moved by the military, to a safe zone after a viral outbreak that wipes out most of humanity.  This nuclear virus takes about 48 hours to incubate and kill a person form fever, lack of oxygen and infection, The surroundings are in Louisiana after a major catastropy.  There is no pre planned course of action….Their MO is just to survive.

This series reminds me of shows like the reality hit Survivor or the longstanding series LOST.  It is interesting to really see human ingenuity at work when you have absolutely nothing.  This show may be a little graphic for children, as there is some violence and adult situations they may not understand, but all in all, it demonrates what it means to be a survivalist wben tested.

Histories greatest warriors, be they primitive savages or full-plated knights, are pitted together in a modern arena of experts, weapons testing, and computer technology!

This is actually a pretty good show, given the improbability of most of their pairings so far. Each warrior is selected, his four main weapons are chosen, his combat ability and killing power tested live, and all the information is fed into some amazingly high tech computer that pits the two in a thousand separate battles, to weed out any lucky kill shots. Seeing weapon experts from the Army come in and test things like the Viking great axe on ballistic gel dummies filled with red food coloring is a lot of fun. And the guys who are regulars on the show, the ones who attach meter readouts on the weapons and feed info into the crazy computers, they get as much of a kick out of the visiting experts who just cleaved a rack of cow ribs into steak, as we do!

Of course, if you’re a fan of history and war, some of the pairings and the battles won have to be taken with a grain of salt. And as soon as they passed the truly medieval battles and went on to things like Pirates (you knew they had to be in there somewheres), there was, in my humble opinion, a distinctly unfair disadvantage with the advent of guns and gunpowder. But that’s me.

So far, we’ve had these pairings:

    Gladiator vs. Apache

    Viking vs. Samurai

    Spartan vs. Ninja

    Pirate vs. Knight

    The Yakuza vs. The Mafia

    Green Beret vs. Spetznaz

    Shaolin Monk vs. Maori Warrior

The Lightman Group, headed by Cal Lightman, is an elite team of deception experts who work assist federal law enforcement, government agencies, the military, local police and many others, at discovering the truth in their more difficult cases.

    tim_roth

Fairly often, when a huge screen star goes from movies to his own television series, it bombs horribly. However, especially recently, that hasn’t been the case. First it was Laurence Fishburne going to CSI: LV, and now we have everyone’s favorite smartass, the redoubtable Tim Roth, taking the lead in Lie To Me. And every single tic, every smirk, every line delivered in a dry British snappy way, is one more bit of proof that Roth is every bit as good on the smaller screen.

Dr. Lightman is joined at the Group by Dr. Gillian Foster, Cal’s partner in the solving of crime, with a much more experimental attitude toward life. Eli Loker, the Lightman Group’s lead researcher, is a little handful, as he’s decided the best way to get by in a job like this is to practice what he calls “radical honesty”. As in, he tells the truth, all the time. There is a memorable scene where he and the newest recruit, a natural talent named Ria Torres, have banter involving potential sex and both parties leave with a smirk. Oh yes.

This really is an awesome show, so far. Like CSI, which I adore, only with facial response recognition and the like as lie detectors. And someone who works on that show has a very cheeky sense of humor, as often when Lightman points out a facial tic as a deception, at the commercial breaks there are pictures tossed into the out-tro featuring famous faces making those tics. Like oh I don’t know, former president Clinton. Or O.J. Ah, to be able to imply so much while actually saying very little.

    factor_high

Roth rocks my socks, and this show fits him to a T!
