Doctor Who Insta-Reaction — The Big Bang

June 28, 2010

Reviewed by Alicia Glass

Warning! Total Spoiler Review!

So where did we leave off, from the two-parter episode The Pandorica Opens, where at the end the Doctor got tossed into the Pandorica by a whole lot of Big Bads, since yknow it’s his fault the cracks are appearing in time and all. Rory the Roman robot has killed poor Amy, and the redoubtable River Song made an epic FAiL trying to fly the TARDIS. But but but but, wait, sealing off the Doctor means time and space is gonna do a polka dance into nothingness!

And here we are, with little Amelia getting her older more grim self out of the Pandorica, that managed to keep Amy Pond alive even after the Rory-bot took her out. And that’s the start of the episode. Squee!

I feel bad for the TARDIS, it had to perma-explode for awhile in order to fix space and time. Amy Pond finally gets her wedding to Rory, but just has to stop right in the middle of it to bring back the guest of honor – the Raggedy Doctor. And bring him back she does, cuz you know, before that the Doctor was just a vague memory held by a very precious few. And yet here he is, in a top hat and tails for her wedding, exiting that wonderful blue box!

And for those of you confused folks just like me, who kept panicking when they heard BBC talking about the Doctor Who Series finale, fear not – the end of Big Bang promises a return of Doctor Who at Christmas 2010!

The Next Doctor Who!

April 13, 2010

The Eleventh Doctor Who is here! Matt Smith stars as the newest Doctor, and with two brand new episodes gracing BBC already, the response is overwhelmingly positive. Fans are flocking to the web to give their opinion, so here’s mine!

The next Doctor strikes me as an interesting mix of the two previous modern-take Doctors: the dark melancholy and sense of humor of Christopher Eccelston, and the sprightly determination of David Tennant. Smith’s brunette pompadour and dark eyes give a nice contrast to the awful wardrobe selected for this latest Doctor, all tweeds and a bow-tie that in all honesty, needs to go. And this new Doctor, after accidentally destroying the last one, gets a brand new Sonic Screwdriver that’s green!

The latest Doctor companion is one Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillian, sporting long red hair and a very passionate personality – perfect counterpoint for an admittedly darkly countenanced Doctor. And while she’s certainly doing a fine job thus far, let’s face it, we’re all here to watch the wacky and wonderful new Doctor!

And, with the advent of everything new, the show has received a brand new title sequence, with new music too! The inside of the TARDIS has gotten a makeover, you can go check it out on the BBC website. Every last thing is new, and BBC’s effort to make things as nifty (and hopefully popular) as they were before, that gave DW such a huge fanbase, is nothing short of a miracle.

I do think it’s a bit of a shame that the TV writer Gods decided to bring the Dalek storyline back in to DW so quickly though. Yes, we know it had to be in there someplace, given Doc’s history with the Daleks, but it doesn’t need to be the third freaking episode.

Whether you’re a fan of the very-old series, the modern-take Doctors, or a first-timer to the Doctor Who universe, the 11th Doctor is a surprise and delight for most, with many surprises for the fans new and old, up his tweed sleeves!

That’s right folks, the 11th Doctor Who has finally been announced!

Noone I’ve ever heard of, Matt Smith has starred in Party Animals, The Secret Diary of a Call Girl and The Ruby and the Smoke, both with former Doctor Who actress Billie Piper, and the upcoming Moses Jones.

The beloved current Doctor Who, David Tennant, is expected to degenerate into the new Smith in the Doctor Who special of 2010, tentatively scheduled for Easter.

Doctor Who Christmas Special 2008

David Tennant returns as the tenth incarnation of everyone’s favorite alien on the ultimate journey, Doctor Who, for a white Christmas in 19th Century Victorian London!

That unfailingly blue phone booth that isn’t really a phone booth, the TARDIS, makes it’s comforting whirr whirr noise and opens the Doctor to a winter wonderland in Londontown, and a surprise. A new friend, a new Doctor actually, who already has a female companion (ironically named Rosita), and the both of them are doing their best to save Londontown! And the things, the things this new Doctor knows, he has to be the real deal right? Then our wonderfully melancholy protagonist wouldn’t be so alone. Alas, it isn’t, don’t kill me for puns, in the stars.

There’s another surprise roiling in Londontown on this fine Christmas Eve. The Cybermen have so totally landed, and look, they even already have a human convert. A woman, with a backbone of pure steel, is sending out the Cybermen to prepare the way for the Cyber King. The Cyber King will rise! Bear in mind though, that I think to the Cybermen, “King” is not a gender specific term.

All in all, it’s a fairly good episode. I enjoyed the Cyber Pets, portrayed by actors in furs suits with detached copper Cyber masks. And the man who thought he was the True Doctor, he had been doing his best to save Londontown from all evil, as the good Doctor pointed out. However, given the controversy and heresay around the issue of the next Doctor for the wildly popular Doctor Who BBC series, titling their Christmas 2008 episode “The Next Doctor” is just mean. I saw it anyway, totally sad rabid fan that I am, and did indeed enjoy it. Only Doctor Who could make Christmas campy and loveable and sci-fi and historical all at the same time!

Merry Christmas 2008 from Doctor Who!
